We’re stoked that Jack joined our team in December 2022. Jack is the latest addition to our barbering team and has settled in nicely to NWBC. Since he’s ‘the new guy’ we wanted to give you a chance to get to know him. Check out this short Q&A session with Jack to learn about his background and experience. Of course, stick around until the end to find out his ‘three celebrity dinner party’ guests and see his artistic abilities under pressure!
Q: Hey Jack! What’s your name and where do you come from?
A: Hey Chris, my name is Jack Eke and I’m from Oswaldtwistle!
Q: What were you doing before you became a barber?
A: Before I trained to become a barber I studied Graphic Design and Advertising at university with the hopes of pursuing a career in the apparel design industry. But I soon realised I wanted a more “hands on” creative job.
Q: How long have you been cutting hair?
A: It’s approaching that 1 year mark!
Q: Where did you do your training?
A: I did my training at the London School Of Barbering in Manchester. It was a full time intensive course and we didn’t cut on the plastic training heads, we had real clients in, so we could learn how to properly interact with them and hold a conversation whilst cutting too.
Q: You’re already really passionate about barbering, what is it that you like about it the most?
A: That’s a tough one! I think for me it’s interacting with the clients. Once you’ve built a relationship with them it doesn’t feel like you’re working, it feels like you're having a catch-up with one of your mates. What’s that saying? - “If you love your job you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Q: I know you’ve been getting your hair cut at NWBC on and off for a few years now, how did you first find out about NWBC?
A: I feel like I’ve always known about North West but I think I first found out about it because it was ‘that sick barbers with that skate shop in it’ and I used to stalk NWBC on Instagram haha.
(Note: We don’t sell skate stuff anymore!)
Q: What is it that you love about NWBC that made you want to cut hair here?
A: I’ve got an emotional connection to NWBC. It was in Scott’s chair where I was inspired to become a barber, after my first hair cut I came out and I knew that’s what I wanted to do, So I feel like this is where it all started. Every time I’d come in for a haircut I’d ask the boys how to become a barber and where they’d recommend training. Now I’m cutting hair from the chair that inspired me. So it kinda feels like home!
Q: And how have your first few weeks been cutting at NWBC?
A: The first few weeks have been awesome! All of the clients and the NWBC boys have been really welcoming and supportive. It’s a real privilege representing the shop.
Q: Enough about barbering, what else are you passionate about outside of the barbershop?
A: I love art, all things design, and I’m a HUGE Star Wars fan!
Q: Favourite band/artist (music)?
A: My favourite band at the minute is an Australian band called Ocean Alley, they’re a psychedelic surf rock band.
Q: And finally; the legendary question. If you could invite three celebrities to a dinner party (for the purposes of this you CAN revive folks from the grave for one night) who would they be?
A: Keith Haring, Jeff Staple and George Lucas
Q: And to conclude this interview, I’m going to test your artistic abilities under pressure! You get a sharpie and a piece of paper, and I want you to draw a self portrait in only 30 seconds. Ready? …..
